When destination wedding specialist Claudia Biegus touched down in Punta Cana on a mission to tour 13 resorts in six days, she came back with far more than a list of venues — she came back with a masterclass in what makes a dream wedding abroad truly unforgettable.
At a Glance
Punta Cana offers destination weddings at roughly one-quarter the cost of comparable U.S. celebrations, with dedicated on-site wedding coordinators at major resorts ensuring flawless execution. The region features diverse resort options—from family-friendly properties to adults-only retreats—each with distinct wedding venues, though couples should verify beach access policies before booking.
Punta Cana is no stranger to sun-seekers, honeymooners, and families chasing the Caribbean dream. But when Claudia Biegus, a destination wedding specialist with over a decade of experience, touched down in the Dominican Republic on a recent fam trip hosted by the Inclusive Collection by Hyatt, she wasn't there to sip cocktails by the pool. She was there to work, and to see, with the sharp eyes of a professional, exactly what makes this destination one of the world's premier backdrops for saying "I do."
Over the course of six packed days, Biegus and a group of fellow travel advisors moved through approximately 13 resorts, each one staging its wedding venues and packages for the visiting agents. Gazebos draped in florals, ceremony setups suspended over shimmering pools, and intimate beachfront altars were laid out in careful detail. Brands including Secrets, Dreams, and Sunscape, all operating under the Hyatt umbrella, were represented, each offering a distinct atmosphere and a different vision of what a destination wedding could look like.
A Spectrum of Settings, One Unforgettable Purpose

What struck Biegus most was not any single resort, but the sheer range of experiences available under one regional destination. "It wasn't just about the destination," she explains, "but it's also about the resort itself, and what the resort does very well when planning a wedding." From lively, family-friendly properties complete with water parks to serene, adults-only retreats designed for couples seeking quiet intimacy, Punta Cana proved it could accommodate nearly every kind of couple and every kind of celebration.
The presence of dedicated on-site wedding coordinators at each resort made a particular impression. These professionals, Biegus notes, are the unsung heroes of the destination wedding world. "The wedding coordinators at the resorts are there to help the bride and groom and they are there to guide them for everything, to make sure everything is perfect." For couples who might feel overwhelmed by the logistics of planning a wedding abroad, that level of hands-on support is not a luxury; it is a lifeline.
There is also a compelling financial case to be made. Biegus was quick to point out that destination weddings in the Dominican Republic come in at roughly a quarter of the cost of a comparable celebration at home, without sacrificing the magic. It is still, she emphasises, their special day. "It's still something they want to be able to experience with their family and friends and still be able to say, you know what, it was totally worth it and the staff did an amazing job."

The Details That Make the Difference
With more than ten years specialising in destination weddings across Mexico, Jamaica, Costa Rica, Panama, and the Dominican Republic, Biegus brings a level of granular knowledge to her client consultations that no brochure can replicate. One insight she now carries back from this trip is the importance of understanding beach access policies at individual resorts. Several properties in the Dominican Republic, particularly in newer and emerging areas, are actively working to preserve their coastlines by restricting direct beach access. For most travellers, that environmental stewardship is admirable. For a couple envisioning their ceremony with toes in the sand, it could be a dealbreaker.
"You want to qualify the client," Biegus explains, "because your client would not be happy going to a resort, if they're beach people, to not be able to see the ocean from where they're sitting." It is exactly the kind of insider knowledge that separates a specialist from a search engine, the kind of detail that only comes from having walked the grounds yourself.

She also highlighted a standout feature that proved more common among these Hyatt-collection properties than she had anticipated: dedicated bridal suites available on-site at the resort. For brides who want a luxurious, private space to prepare on the morning of their wedding, this is a significant detail. "A lot of resorts don't offer" this, Biegus notes, making its presence across several of the properties she visited a genuine selling point she will now actively share with her clients.
More Than a Wedding Destination
While destination weddings are Biegus's professional passion, she is equally enthusiastic about Punta Cana as a destination in its own right. Cruise ships dock here. Catamarans depart at sunrise. Deep-sea fishing, horseback riding along the shoreline, and snorkelling in clear turquoise waters fill the days of families, couples, and solo travellers alike. And then there is the food. "Oh my God, the food is absolutely amazing," she says, her enthusiasm entirely unfiltered, "for the different cultures and different areas that you can experience."

For Biegus, the question of who should skip Punta Cana has a simple answer: almost no one. The beaches are beautiful, the people are warm, and the breadth of experiences on offer means the destination can flex to suit nearly any traveller. Whether a couple is planning an intimate elopement, an engagement celebration, or a full-scale group wedding with extended family in tow, Punta Cana has a resort, a venue, and a coordinator ready to make it happen.
Looking Ahead
Back home and already fielding enquiries from couples inspired by her insights, Biegus is now turning her gaze to new horizons. Her next adventure will take her to the Virgin Islands aboard Windstar Cruises, a small-ship luxury line she holds in high regard. The appeal, she says, is in the access. Small ships can slip into intimate ports that the massive ocean liners simply cannot reach, offering a more personal, immersive experience of each destination. It is, in many ways, a philosophy that mirrors her approach to travel advising itself: get closer, go deeper, and bring back what only firsthand experience can offer.
