Sarah De Sousa's Ha Long Bay Elopement Changed Everything

I actually love what I do. And part of that love comes from a trip that surprised even me: the ten days my partner and I spent backpacking through Vietnam, searching for the perfect place to elope.
We didn't have it all figured out beforehand. No venue booked months in advance, no elaborate planning timeline. We simply knew we wanted to do something different, something that felt like us. So we packed light and set off, trusting that we'd know the right spot when we found it.
Finding the Perfect Place

Vietnam unfolded in front of us day by day. We moved through the country with open itineraries, letting each experience guide us to the next. And then we reached Ha Long Bay. There was a private island there, and the moment we saw it, we knew. This was where we would do it. No second-guessing, no looking back. We found the perfect place to elope, and that's where we did it.
What surprised me most was how much I enjoyed the entire process. I had never been to Vietnam before, and yet pulling everything together felt natural. From start to finish, I planned the whole trip myself. The logistics of getting married abroad, in a place I'd never been, should have felt overwhelming. Instead, it felt exhilarating. I discovered something about myself on that trip: I'm comfortable building something beautiful in unfamiliar territory. That confidence has stayed with me ever since.
What Ten Days Taught Me

Spending ten days in Vietnam gave us more than just a wedding. We had time to explore, to get lost in the details of a country that was completely new to us. The pace of backpacking suited us perfectly. We weren't rushing to a ceremony and then flying home. We were living an adventure that happened to include exchanging vows on a private island in one of the most stunning landscapes I've ever seen.
I pay attention to details. I'm very approachable. And that experience in Vietnam sharpened both of those instincts. When you're planning something as personal as an elopement in an unfamiliar country, you learn quickly what matters and what doesn't. You learn to trust your instincts while staying flexible. Those lessons have become central to how I work with couples today.
What This Means for My Clients

Having lived through the experience of planning my own elopement abroad, I bring something different to the table when I help couples with destination weddings or honeymoons. I know what it feels like to navigate a foreign place with something deeply personal at stake. I can help build itineraries that leave room for discovery while making sure the important moments are taken care of.
For couples dreaming of eloping somewhere unexpected, or honeymooners looking for something beyond the ordinary in Southeast Asia or the Caribbean, I get it. I've been there. I understand the mix of excitement and uncertainty that comes with planning something meaningful in a place you've never been. And I know how to turn that into an experience that feels just right, from start to finish.
