Erwan Corre Discovers Family Paradise and Border Realities Across South Africa and Mozambique

South Africa, particularly Kruger National Park, offers families an excellent mix of wildlife, history, food, and hospitality with accessible infrastructure. Mozambique's Maputo Bay delivers stunning water sports and snorkeling but requires experienced travelers due to complicated border crossings and logistical challenges unsuitable for beginners.
When travel advisor Erwan Corre set out for South Africa and Mozambique with his family, he was seeking the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. What he discovered was a destination that defied expectations, offering both spectacular rewards and sobering realities about cross-border travel in Southern Africa.
The journey began in Johannesburg before moving on to the iconic Kruger National Park, then crossing into Mozambique to explore the coastal delights around Maputo. For Corre, this wasn't just a family vacation, it was an opportunity to experience firsthand what he describes as "a kind of a good mix of natural nature and beaches" that he could later recommend to clients.
A Watery Paradise in Maputo Bay
The highlight of the entire trip emerged in an unexpected location. While exploring the waters near Maputo, Corre and his family found themselves water skiing in what felt like their own private paradise. "It is actually when we're doing some water skiing in the Bay Area, close to Maputo is just like nobody around," Corre recalls, describing a scene that many travelers dream of but rarely experience.
The bay area proved to be more than just a water sports haven. The family discovered excellent snorkeling opportunities in crystal-clear waters, followed by what Corre describes as a "wonderful seafood restaurant in the Bay." These moments of discovery, where tourism infrastructure meets unspoiled natural beauty, represent exactly the kind of authentic experiences that discerning travelers seek.
Border Crossing Reality Check
Not everything went according to plan, however. Corre encountered his biggest surprise when transitioning between countries. "Crossing the border from South Africa to Mozambique was definitely more complicated than I expected," he notes, highlighting a crucial consideration for future travelers to the region.
This experience illuminated an important distinction that Corre now emphasizes when consulting with clients. While South Africa proved to be remarkably accessible for families, offering what he found to be "a very good compromise if you want to have a good mix of nature history, good food, good people, an incredible property," Mozambique presented different challenges entirely.
Expertise Through Experience
The contrast between the two destinations has fundamentally shaped how Corre approaches client recommendations. South Africa, particularly the Kruger region, exceeded his expectations and proved ideal for families seeking diverse experiences without extreme adventure requirements. The infrastructure, hospitality, and variety of activities created what he describes as an environment that "is to be better than I had anticipated in a way."
Mozambique, while offering extraordinary natural beauty and unique experiences, requires a different approach entirely. Corre now advises that "Mozambique is not a destination for beginners" and recommends it specifically for "experienced travelers" while suggesting families "avoid it at the moment" due to logistical complexities and infrastructure challenges.
This nuanced understanding exemplifies the value of firsthand travel experience for travel professionals. As Corre explains, "when you know a place you can better recommend to your clients because you're getting an on-site expertise that you can really promote. It's not the same thing as just telling things you've been trained about, but not having experienced it by yourself."
Looking Forward
The Southern Africa experience has become part of Corre's growing portfolio of personally vetted destinations. His approach to travel, both personal and professional, emphasizes the importance of experiencing destinations across different contexts and with various travel styles in mind.
With future trips planned to Qatar and the Western United States, Corre continues to build his expertise through direct experience. His next adventure will focus on destinations he wants his own family to discover, reinforcing his belief that the places worth recommending are often the ones that create lasting personal memories first.
