Julie Catton Discovers the Timeless Magic of Jordan and Egypt's Ancient Wonders

At a Glance

Egypt and Jordan deliver profound ancient experiences, with Petra's Siq canyon and Egypt's pyramids offering spiritual connections to civilizations 4,500 years old. Expert local guides are essential to understand historical significance; the Nile River presents modern tourism challenges despite romantic appeal. Allow sufficient time to absorb these destinations fully.

For travel advisor Julie Catton, the allure of ancient civilizations had been calling for years. The pyramids, the Nile River, the rose-red city of Petra. These weren't just destinations on a map, they were bucket list dreams waiting to be fulfilled. When she finally embarked on her journey through Jordan and Egypt, the experience exceeded even her highest expectations.

"Visiting Jordan and Egypt was a bucket list item for me. I've always wanted to see the pyramids and the Nile River. It did not disappoint!" Catton reflects on what would become one of her most transformative travel experiences to date.

A Journey Through Time

The adventure began in Jordan, where Petra revealed its secrets slowly, dramatically. The long hike through the narrow canyon, known as the Siq, offered Catton a constantly changing tableau of colors and perspectives carved into towering sandstone cliffs. Each turn brought new revelations, new shades of pink and gold dancing across ancient stone.

But it was in Egypt where the true emotional impact of the journey hit home. Standing before the Great Pyramid of Giza and the enigmatic Sphinx, Catton found herself transported across millennia. "Seeing the pyramids and the sphinx for the first time was almost spiritual for me. Visioning the people who walked there about 4500 years ago in a very different time and land makes one wish you could see and hear their stories in person."

Unexpected Discoveries

Like many seasoned travelers, Catton discovered that reality doesn't always match expectations. The legendary Nile River, so romantic in imagination, presented a more complex picture up close. "The Nile River was so dirty and congested with river cruise ships at the start. It was a race to get to the locks first so their journey could extend beyond," she observed, noting the practical realities of modern tourism on ancient waterways.

Jordan, however, delivered pleasant surprises at every turn. Beyond the archaeological wonders, Catton was struck by the warmth and authenticity of the people she encountered. The country's reputation for safety proved well-founded, and the genuine hospitality of locals added an unexpected dimension to her historical exploration.

The Power of Expert Guidance

Perhaps the most valuable lesson from Catton's journey was the irreplaceable value of knowledgeable local expertise. Standing amid temples and monuments that have witnessed thousands of years of history, she quickly realized that the stones themselves, however impressive, tell only part of the story.

"You need an Egyptologist to describe everything that you are seeing and the history behind the various temples, monuments, etc.," Catton emphasizes. The difference between simply seeing these ancient sites and truly understanding their significance became crystal clear through expert interpretation.

This insight extends beyond just having a guide. Catton learned that rushing through such historically rich destinations does them a disservice. "It's important to take enough time to see as much as you can while there. It is a long journey, and having a guide with us throughout the trip brought everything to life through stories and images."

Professional Transformation

Returning home, Catton found that her experience had fundamentally changed how she approaches client recommendations. The difference between reading about a destination and walking its ancient paths cannot be overstated. "I can speak passionately about one of my favourite trips ever! I also share some key photos to show clients what it actually looks like," she explains.

This firsthand knowledge allows her to paint vivid pictures for clients, helping them understand not just what they'll see, but how they'll feel standing in these historically significant places. She can now confidently recommend the trip to history enthusiasts and even mobility-challenged travelers, knowing that the sites offer profound experiences regardless of physical limitations.

For those who might not appreciate ancient history or cultural immersion, however, Catton can now provide honest guidance that this might not be their ideal journey. Such nuanced advice only comes from personal experience.

As Catton looks toward her next adventure, Africa beckons with promises of glamping safaris, Cape Town's vibrant culture, and wine tours through renowned vineyards. Her Egyptian and Jordanian odyssey has only whetted her appetite for more transformative travel experiences that will continue to enhance her expertise as a travel professional.
