Paul Birch's Italy Discovery: When the Colosseum Takes Your Breath
Italy had always been on my radar, but as a travel advisor, I needed to experience it for myself. How else could I speak with genuine authority to clients dreaming of Roman holidays and Italian adventures? So I planned a FIT (fully independent travel) trip to see what the fuss was all about, and whether the magic I'd heard so much about was real.
It absolutely was.
The Moment Everything Changed
When you see the Colosseum for the first time, something shifts inside you. It's the kind of moment that stays with you, the one I keep thinking about and telling people about. Standing there, taking in this ancient amphitheater that has witnessed nearly two thousand years of history, I understood why so many travelers put Italy at the top of their list. No photograph, no documentary, no amount of research can prepare you for that first encounter.
What surprised me most was how much there is to see in a generally small area. Rome packs an incredible amount of history, art, and culture into walkable distances. I'll admit there was a lot of walking, but the excitement completely outweighed the exhaustion. I slept well at night, my feet tired but my mind buzzing with everything I'd taken in that day.
An Insider Discovery
One of my favorite finds was a restaurant called Mimi e Coco. Not only can you dine inside, but they have outdoor seating tucked away in a little alley that gives you that perfect outdoor bistro vibe. The food was amazing, the ambiance was exactly what you picture when you imagine dining in Rome, and the prices were surprisingly reasonable. It's the kind of place I now recommend to clients who want an authentic experience without the tourist markup.
That brings me to what really surprised me: how affordable seeing so much in a short period of time can actually be. I think we sometimes have a misconception that these destinations that seem so out of reach are actually very easy to see and can be done on a budget. Italy doesn't have to be a once in a lifetime splurge. With the right planning, it's wonderfully accessible.
What I'd Do Differently
I stayed out in the suburbs to save some money and took the metro into the tourist areas. The metro is fantastic, efficient and easy to navigate. But next time, I will stay closer to Trevi Fountain or a closer stop along the metro route. Being in the heart of Rome means you can step outside your hotel and immediately be immersed in the city's energy, grabbing a morning espresso before the crowds arrive or taking an evening passeggiata without worrying about train schedules.
Who Should Go (And Who Should Wait)
I would recommend a trip like this to foodies, wine enthusiasts, history buffs, singles, and couples. It makes for a wonderful romantic getaway, think honeymoon material. However, I would probably advise caution if you don't like crowds or have mobility restrictions. The streets are mainly cobblestone and are not friendly to those using walkers. For anyone who doesn't move as quickly as they once did, I would recommend staying for a longer duration to enjoy everything at a comfortable pace.
Having experienced Italy firsthand, I know that when you talk to me about it, the excitement comes flowing back instantly, like I was there yesterday. This trip reinforced something I believe deeply: you don't have to pay a fortune to experience the world. Having someone knowledgeable with real life experience plan your trip is essential.
