Misti Discovers Bermuda's Pink Sands and Azorean Roots

When I earned this Norwegian Cruise Line incentive trip, I knew it would be special. But what I didn't expect was how different this itinerary would feel from every other cruise I've taken. Instead of the typical hop from port to port, this was essentially a floating hotel docked in Bermuda for three full days. That format changed everything about how we experienced the island.
The trip actually started in one of my favourite cities: New York. I've been about nine times now, so when my best friend (who had never visited) earned the incentive trip with me, we added three days before embarking. Showing her around the city, hitting our favourite food spots, visiting the One World Trade Center, it was the perfect way to ease into vacation mode. And here's my tip: always arrive at least one day before your cruise departs. You never know what weather or travel delays might throw at you. We knew we had extra days built in, which made everything feel relaxed from the start.
Bermuda Beyond the Beach

The pink sand beach was absolutely gorgeous. We soaked up proper beach days with that iconic scenery, but what really surprised us happened at the Royal Naval Dockyard when we docked. My husband is Portuguese, specifically from the Azores, and we had no idea there was such a deep Azorean connection to Bermuda. When we saw the Azorean flag flying near the dock, we had to investigate. Turns out there's an Azorean Museum right there, celebrating how Azorean settlers came years ago to help farm the land and develop the country. Finding that piece of my husband's heritage in Bermuda was one of the true highlights of our trip.
Having three days instead of one made all the difference. We took the little ferry into Hamilton, wandered the streets, popped into shops, and had a really good meal without feeling rushed. The downtown area has that mix of nightlife energy and chill island vibes. You can be busy if you want, or you can just decompress on the beach. That balance felt easy and natural because we weren't racing against a single day's clock.
The Ferry Lesson I Learned the Hard Way

Here's something I wish someone had told me: pay close attention to the ferry schedule back to the ship. After a certain hour, I think it was around 10:30 p.m., the ferry stops running. We were exploring Hamilton and had another event, so we didn't get in line early enough. Suddenly we were scrambling with everyone else trying to find taxis, which gets expensive fast. We ended up finding two other couples to split a van, which made it way cheaper, but it was definitely stressful. Now I know: if you're out at night in Hamilton, get to the ferry line way before the last departure. It's a 20 to 30 minute ride versus a much longer, pricier taxi drive.
Who Would Love This
This itinerary is perfect for anyone who appreciates sea days and doesn't need the go-go-go pace of hitting a new port every morning. The Atlantic crossing gives you time to relax on board before arriving in Bermuda. Families with a mix of ages, from elderly travelers who want downtime to younger explorers who crave adventure, would all find something here. Bermuda delivers both the active downtown experience and those quiet, stunning beach moments.

As a Norwegian Cruise Line University certified advisor and Latitudes Rewards Platinum member, I've spent years getting to know this cruise line inside and out. This trip reinforced what I love about Norwegian: the flexibility, the value, and how easy they make everything feel. For this specific itinerary, I would absolutely recommend adding a pre or post stay in New York City. You only need a few days to experience the best of it, and pairing that energy with Bermuda's laid-back island vibe creates something really special. Funny enough, we're actually leaving in three weeks for another Norwegian cruise, the Epic through the Mediterranean for my husband's 40th birthday. Once you find an itinerary style that works, you keep coming back.
