Marcy's Vancouver to Hawaii Cruise: A Tale of Two Destinations
I've always believed that the journey matters as much as the destination. So when the opportunity came to lead a group trip on Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas from Vancouver to Oahu, Hawaii, I knew this was my chance to experience something truly special: a one-way cruise that would transform transit into an adventure of its own.

Three of our families were completely new to cruising, and I'll admit I wondered how they'd adjust. I shouldn't have worried. They found their sea legs remarkably fast (with a little help from my bag of tricks) and threw themselves into the experience with genuine enthusiasm. Watching first-time cruisers fall in love with life at sea, seeing their kids race to activities while parents finally relaxed with a cocktail on deck, that's the kind of moment that makes my work meaningful.

Sailing in October turned out to be a brilliant choice. It's lower season, which meant fewer crowds both onboard and in Hawaii. The weather cooperated beautifully. If you're considering this route, I can't recommend October enough for that perfect balance of pleasant conditions and peaceful experiences.
The Royal HAwaiin Center in Waikiki hosts free events - keep your eyes open for the lei making class! Even my teen boya enjoyed this one and it was great to have something to take away from the class along with the history we learned!
Once we arrived in Hawaii, we stayed for an extra week before flying home. This is the beauty of a one-way cruise: you get the full cruising experience while actually getting somewhere, then you have time to immerse yourself in your destination. It's genuinely two holidays in one.
Hawaiian Discoveries Worth Planning For
Here's an insider tip most travelers would never find on their own: the Hawaiian Institute of Marine Biology offers an absolutely fabulous tour of their facilities. It's not on the typical tourist radar, but it gave us a deeper understanding of Hawaii's marine ecosystems that made every beach visit afterward feel more meaningful.
The Polynesian Cultural Center was hands down the most incredible experience of our entire trip. The performances, the village experiences, the food. It connected us to culture of the islands in a way that no resort luau ever could. I now recommend it to every single client considering Hawaii.
Who This Trip Is Perfect For
This cruise is ideal for families with kids of any age. The Anthem of the Seas truly has something for everyone, from toddlers to teenagers to grandparents. The ship offers endless activities for active travelers while providing plenty of quiet spaces for those who want to unwind with a book and ocean views.
However, if you're an older couple seeking a completely quiet, serene atmosphere, this particular ship might feel too lively for your taste. I'd steer you toward a different vessel or itinerary.
