At a Glance

The Azores offer year-round lush landscapes and accessible adventure across multiple islands. Visitors can experience canyoning, volcano tours, and hiking within two to three days per island, with reliable inter-island ferries and flights making multi-island itineraries practical. September and November visits deliver consistent green scenery and clear weather.

For travel advisor Marcia White, the Azores have become a repeat destination that continues to reveal new layers of natural beauty and adventure. Having visited Portugal's mid-Atlantic archipelago twice now, White has developed both a personal passion for the islands and professional insights that benefit her clients seeking authentic outdoor experiences.

Adventures Above and Beyond

White's most memorable moments came through activities that pushed her outside her comfort zone. During her time on São Miguel, she tackled canyoning at Ribeira do Salto do Cabrito, an experience that left a lasting impression despite initial hesitations. "We did some fantastic canyoning, which I was a little nervous about but it was a lot of fun," White recalls.

The adventure didn't stop there. A volcano tour around Sete Cidades aboard side-by-side quads provided spectacular vantage points of the famous twin lakes. The timing couldn't have been more perfect, with clear skies offering unobstructed views across the caldera. White describes how "we drove side-by-side quads all around the lake and got all the views and took some fantastic photos. It was really spectacular and we had a perfect day to do it because we could see right across and it was beautiful."

A Year-Round Green Paradise

One of White's biggest surprises was discovering the Azores' consistent natural beauty across different seasons. Having visited in both September and November, she witnessed the islands' remarkable ability to maintain their lush landscapes regardless of timing. "The thing that surprised me most was just how green everything is," White notes, emphasizing that both visits revealed "beautifully green" scenery with "great weather and just amazing views."

This seasonal reliability has become valuable intelligence for White's client recommendations, allowing her to confidently suggest travel dates beyond the traditional peak summer months.

Island-Hopping Made Simple

Through her multi-island experiences visiting São Miguel and Terceira, and sending clients to Pico, Faial, and other islands in the chain, White has mastered the logistics that often intimidate first-time visitors. Her hands-on experience has revealed that inter-island travel, whether by ferry or short flights, is far more accessible than many travelers assume.

This practical knowledge has shaped her approach to itinerary planning. White now recommends strategic island-hopping as the optimal way to experience the archipelago, suggesting that travelers "don't need more than three or four days, two or three days really on each of the islands, because you can see most of each island within a few days." Her insider perspective emphasizes that moving between islands "is highly recommended to do more than one."

The Perfect Fit for Outdoor Enthusiasts

White's experiences have crystallized her understanding of the Azores' ideal clientele. The destination particularly appeals to travelers who gravitate toward active pursuits and natural settings. "Anyone who enjoys hiking and landscapes and just the outdoors in general, would love this trip," she explains, noting the universal appeal of the islands' adventure offerings.

Her comprehensive island experiences have equipped White with detailed knowledge of each destination's highlights and practical considerations. "I know better, what places there are to see on each island, what works well, what doesn't work well, and really again the traveling between the islands," White reflects, highlighting how firsthand experience translates directly into more informed client service.
