Loreen's 14-Day British Isles Discovery: History, Heart, and Jimmy
In September 2023, my husband Barry and our friends Ken and Maureen joined me on a 14-day cruise through the British Isles aboard a Norwegian Cruise Line ship. I'd always been drawn to this region, its layered histories, its dramatic coastlines, and the promise of discovering what makes each country distinct. As a travel advisor, I needed to see it for myself. I needed to walk the streets, talk to the locals, and understand the nuances that no brochure could ever capture.
What I didn't expect was to be moved so deeply by a man named Jimmy.
A Private Tour That Changed Everything
When we docked in Belfast, we had arranged a private driver to show us around the city. Jimmy was warm, knowledgeable, and passionate about his home. He drove us through neighborhoods where the conflict between Ireland and the United Kingdom still simmers beneath the surface. He showed us murals, memorials, and streets where the fighting continues even now, though the newspapers and media have largely stopped covering it. Some of what we saw would make you cry. It was raw and real, a side of Belfast that tourists rarely encounter unless they have someone like Jimmy to open that door.
That experience stayed with me more than any castle or scenic overlook. It reminded me why I travel, and why I do what I do as an advisor. The best trips aren't just about seeing places. They're about understanding them.
Lessons Learned the Hard Way
I'll be honest: I made a mistake on this trip that I'll never repeat. We didn't book our excursions through the cruise line. We had planned to visit Loch Ness for a boat cruise, but I hadn't realized how far the port was from the actual loch. It was about an hour's drive, and we ended up paying a taxi driver a hefty sum to get us there and back. It was a lesson in logistics that I now share with every client. When you're cruising, the distance between port and destination can be deceptive. Booking through the cruise line ensures you won't be left behind if timing gets tricky.
What surprised me most was how different each country felt within the British Isles. The people in Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and England are all kind and welcoming, but their histories, their cultures, their ways of life are so distinct. At times, those histories intertwine. At other times, they diverge dramatically. It's a fascinating mosaic that rewards the curious traveler.

What I also learned, and this applies to every destination I recommend, is to be kind, respectful of the people and their properties. Don't be that annoying tourist. Travel is a privilege. Embrace it with humility.
