Lesa Nelson's Alaska Discovery: Where Wildlife Meets White Glove Service

I've been fortunate to visit stunning northern destinations like Iceland and Greenland, but when the opportunity came to experience Alaska aboard Cunard's Queen Elizabeth, I knew this would be different. As a travel advisor, I needed to understand how a traditional luxury cruise line would showcase one of the world's most dramatic landscapes. I wanted to feel the difference between reading an itinerary and actually living it.

From the moment we sailed out of Vancouver, I realized Alaska had surprises waiting for me. Before visiting, I pictured rugged mountains, glaciers, and cold weather. And yes, there was plenty of that. But there were also beautiful sunny days that caught me completely off guard. One afternoon, a group of us came back from exploring town, changed into our swimsuits, and spent hours lounging around the outdoor pool. I actually got a sunburn in Alaska, which was definitely not something I had on my bingo card.

A Live Nature Documentary

The wildlife was relentless in the best possible way. Unlike my experiences in Iceland and Greenland, where wildlife sightings can be rare, Alaska delivered something new every single day. We'd be out on deck and dolphins would race alongside the ship. Then we'd spot sea lions on the shoreline. Later, whales would breach in the distance while we ate breakfast. One evening at dinner, whales started breaching right outside our window. In Alaska, nature doesn't care what's on your itinerary, so you learn quickly to always keep an eye on the scenery.

Even on shore, the encounters continued. In Ketchikan, a bear wandered a little too close to the local taverns. Eagles soared constantly overhead in every port. It felt like a live nature documentary unfolding in front of us, and I couldn't look away.

Cunard's Elegant Surprise

I'll admit I went in expecting Cunard to be formal and reserved. I expected ballroom dancing, afternoon tea, and lectures. Those were certainly there, and the afternoon tea absolutely lived up to the hype. But what surprised me was how much fun everyone was having. The atmosphere was elegant without being stuffy. One of my favorite memories was trying ballroom dancing and happening to partner with someone who was an excellent dancer. For at least a few minutes, I looked exactly like I knew what I was doing. Unfortunately, there are no witnesses willing to confirm that.

What I tell clients now is not to make the mistake of thinking traditional luxury is for stuffy people. Our group had an incredible time filled with laughter, great conversations, and more than a few late nights. You can attend a fascinating lecture in the afternoon, enjoy a formal dinner in the evening, and end up laughing with friends much later than you intended.

The Itinerary Revelation

Here's what I couldn't have understood before this trip: itinerary matters enormously in Alaska. We experienced multiple glacier areas, sailing through Glacier Bay National Park and witnessing the stunning glaciers of Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier. Many Alaska cruises only include one glacier viewing day, and I now understand how much that affects the overall experience. Some itineraries focus on ports and towns while others emphasize scenic cruising and glacier viewing. Neither is wrong, but they appeal to different types of travelers.

I also learned that you don't necessarily need a balcony cabin. While balconies are wonderful, when someone spots whales or dolphins or a bear on shore, the whole ship migrates to whatever deck has the best view. The real action happens in the shared spaces where fellow passengers become your wildlife spotting companions.

This cruise would be perfect for nature lovers, photographers, multigenerational families (Cunard's children's program had kids in our group raving), and first time cruisers looking to get hooked immediately. It's also ideal for anyone who wants enrichment and great service over water slides and nonstop entertainment. I wouldn't recommend it for someone seeking tropical beaches or nightlife focused activities.

I don't just recommend Alaska anymore. I recommend a specific experience based on what matters most to each traveler. Are you dreaming of whales and wildlife? Massive glaciers up close? Historic towns and local culture? Now that I've lived it, I can match you to the right cruise with confidence. And honestly? After chatting about this trip, I already want to go back.
