Here's something most travelers wouldn't figure out on their own: start in Athens. Spend an extra day there before embarking, and make time to visit the Acropolis. Athens is rocky and lacks the greenery you'll encounter later, so experiencing it first allows you to truly appreciate its ancient beauty. If you save Athens for the end, after all those lush landscapes in Montenegro and Italy, it can feel like an anticlimax. The order matters more than people realize.
I also learned valuable lessons about shore excursions. Some ports have long transfers, while others let you hop off and explore immediately. And some organized tours waste precious time at artisan shops that eat into your day. In Sorrento, we spent 20 minutes at a furniture store when we could have been exploring and shopping for souvenirs we might actually bring home. Now I know which excursions to recommend and which to skip.
Who This Journey Is For
This itinerary works beautifully for almost any traveler and nearly any age. I sailed with teenagers and dear friends, and we all found magic in it. If a balcony is within budget, it's always worth the upgrade. Morning coffee watching the coastline slide by, or a glass of wine before dinner as the sun sets over the Mediterranean? You simply cannot replicate that experience from an interior cabin.
