Kelly Chang's Seoul Guide: Skincare, Sky-High Hotels, and Secrets

Kelly Chang's Seoul Guide: Skincare, Sky-High Hotels, and Secrets

My husband and I traveled to Seoul for what started as a personal getaway, but I couldn't help approaching the trip with my advisor hat on. I wanted to understand the hotels, the neighborhoods, the transportation, and most importantly, who I would confidently recommend Seoul to. What I discovered was a city that rewards preparation and delivers experiences unlike anywhere else.

We arrived late on our first night and headed straight to Signiel Seoul, a luxury hotel situated inside the landmark Lotte World Tower. The hotel sits so high above the city that when I woke up the next morning, I genuinely felt like we were above the clouds. The Han River stretched out on one side, the entire Seoul skyline on the other. Even small details made an impression, like the blanket on our bed, which was honestly one of the best I've ever experienced. The breakfast buffet exceeded every expectation. Signiel became a destination in itself, not just a place to sleep.

Discovering Seoul's Neighborhoods and Skincare Culture

During our days exploring, I quickly learned that Seoul's neighborhoods each have their own personality. We wandered through Ikseon-dong Hanok Village, sampled Korea's famous salt bread, and then headed to Seongsu for shopping. If you're only going to Myeongdong because it's the most famous shopping area, you're missing out. Seongsu has a more local, trendy energy and felt far more interesting to explore.

The skincare culture surprised me the most. I knew Korea was known for K-beauty, but I didn't realize how deeply woven into daily life it is. Olive Young stores appeared on nearly every corner, sometimes more frequently than convenience stores. The flagship locations in Myeongdong and Seongsu felt like full beauty destinations, with multiple floors, product testing areas, and tax refund services.

We also visited Nohd Dermatology in Gangnam for skincare treatments. What impressed me was their honesty. They analyzed our skin, recommended only what we actually needed, and never pressured us to add services. They spoke excellent English and Chinese, and the treatments cost about three times less than comparable ones in the United States. This is the kind of personalized experience I want for my clients, not the high-pressure upselling you sometimes find at larger clinics.

Two Luxury Hotels, Two Distinct Experiences

Our second hotel, Sofitel Ambassador Seoul, offered something completely different. The French design and Parisian décor were so convincing that some days it honestly felt like we were in Europe. Located near Seokchon Lake, known for its pink cherry blossoms, the hotel has easy access to Jamsil Station and the neighboring Lotte World Tower. The rooftop bar on the 32nd floor became one of our favorite evening spots.

Staying at both properties taught me something important. Signiel is for clients who want dramatic skyline views, Michelin-level dining, and the feeling of staying above the clouds. Sofitel is for clients who want European elegance, lakeside strolls, and seamless access to Seoul's transit network. Those distinctions matter when I'm matching a hotel to a traveler.

Who Will Love Seoul, and Who Should Think Twice

Seoul is perfect for travelers who love shopping, skincare, food, luxury hotels, and full itineraries. Anyone following K-beauty trends or wanting professional treatments at a fraction of U.S. prices will be thrilled. The city also rewards people who enjoy discovering distinct neighborhoods and don't mind a fast pace.

That said, Seoul requires planning. Standard map apps don't work well here, so downloading Naver Map or KakaoMap is essential. The city involves significant walking, hills, and narrow sidewalks, which can be challenging for anyone with mobility limitations. Strict vegans or those with severe food allergies will also face difficulties, since animal and seafood ingredients hide in broths and sauces. We visited in June, and the heat combined with inconsistent air conditioning on the subway made midday travel uncomfortable.

I came home understanding Seoul in a way no brochure could teach me. Now I can guide clients through the apps they need, the neighborhoods worth exploring, and the hotels that match their style. For anyone ready to experience Korea's energy, skincare culture, and sky-high luxury, I know exactly how to make it happen.
