Karrie Szabo's Guide to Experiencing Hawaii Like a Local

United States — Karrie Szabo's travel story

Hawaii has always pulled at me. There's something about those islands that keeps calling me back, and this third trip with my husband was about filling in the gaps, exploring the corners I hadn't yet discovered. After two previous visits, I thought I knew the islands well. But spending two full weeks between Oahu and Maui showed me just how much more there was to uncover.

I needed this trip not just for myself, but for my clients. When someone asks me about Hawaii, I want to speak from experience. I want to tell them exactly where to go, what to skip, and how to make every day count.

Discovering Oahu's North Shore and Beyond

The North Shore of Oahu had somehow eluded me on my previous trips, and finally getting there felt like meeting a friend everyone had been talking about. The energy is completely different from Waikiki. It's laid back, authentic, and the kind of place where you want to linger over shave ice and watch the surfers work those legendary waves.

But the real standout was Kualoa Ranch. I'd heard about it for years, seen it in countless movies, but walking that land myself was something else entirely. The mountains rising up around you, the sense of history and Hollywood magic blending together. It's the kind of experience that makes you understand why people fall in love with Hawaii and never quite get over it.

The Secret Weapon That Changed Everything

Here's what I want every traveler to know: rent a car and download the GuideAlong app. This combination transformed how I explored both islands. The app essentially gave us a guided tour right from our rental car, narrating the history and significance of each stop while we drove at our own pace. No rushing to keep up with a tour bus. No missing something because the guide was too far ahead. We stopped when we wanted, stayed as long as we liked, and I'm confident we saw the top sites of both Maui and Oahu because of it.

Another tip I picked up: we added an overnight layover in Vancouver on our way to Hawaii. It sounds counterintuitive, but breaking up that long flight made the time change so much easier to adjust to. We arrived in Hawaii feeling refreshed instead of jet-lagged, ready to explore from day one.

Who Will Love Hawaii (And How I'll Send Them)

United States — Karrie Szabo's travel story

Hawaii is perfect for anyone who loves the outdoors, appreciates stunning scenery, and craves excellent food in a relaxed setting. If you're a golfer, the courses here are world-class. If you just want to slow down and breathe, the islands welcome that too. This isn't a destination for people who need constant nightlife or high-intensity adventure every moment. It rewards those who appreciate beauty in its most natural form.

Now when clients ask about Hawaii, I have a clear blueprint. I'll send them to Oahu for three nights first, just enough time to explore Pearl Harbor, experience Kualoa Ranch, drive up to the North Shore, and enjoy some fantastic restaurants. Then they'll island hop, maybe to Maui, maybe to the Big Island, carrying that Oahu foundation with them.

This destination remains one of my absolute favorites, and now I understand it on a deeper level. I know the rhythm of the islands, the tools that make exploring easier, and the itinerary that maximizes every precious vacation day. When my clients come back from Hawaii, I want them to feel the same magic I felt. And now, I know exactly how to make that happen.
