Joyce Britton Found Her Signature Moment in New Zealand

For years, I had been following Hobbiton on social media. Every time those cute little colorful houses built into the rolling green hills appeared in my feed, my heart would tug. I kept telling myself, "Someday, I'm going to go there." But someday kept getting pushed further away. Then one day, I stopped and asked myself a simple question: What is really stopping me?
The answer led me to book a Princess Cruise two years in advance, round-trip from Sydney. I knew I would be doing this as a Solo Traveler. I don't have friends who would be as excited to see Hobbiton and travel halfway around the world to experience it. And honestly, I realized that was perfectly fine.
Arriving in Sydney and Setting Sail

I arrived in Sydney a couple of days early so I could immerse myself in the city before the cruise. I did a small group tour to the Blue Mountains, where I spent a wonderful time viewing the Three Sisters and savoring lunch at a beautiful restaurant with a great sample of Australian beer. I stayed at the Four Seasons right there by Circular Quay, which turned out to be the perfect location. I was able to walk and roll my luggage over to the cruise port in about five minutes. That's an insider tip I will absolutely share with clients sailing from that port.
The night before the cruise, I received an unexpected email from Princess saying my cabin had been changed. I had hand-picked an obstructed balcony cabin, but somehow I was upgraded to an unobstructed balcony on a higher deck. I still don't know why, but I was grateful. Sometimes things just work out.
New Zealand Discoveries

After three days on the Tasman Sea, we arrived at Bay of Islands. I did a boat excursion to some of the islands with an opportunity to snorkel. What surprised me was how unseasonably cool it was for February, which is supposed to be summer there. The locals even said it was cooler than normal. Only two people from our group ended up snorkeling, but we had a wonderful time on the water, spotting one of the resident seals and passing through a spectacular arch at the end of the island.
In Auckland, I went up into the Auckland Sky Tower, and something shifted for me there. I was going through a really rough season in my career at the time, a full-time job that was draining me. Standing there, looking out over the city with space to reflect, I got clarity on what I needed to do. It was transformative in ways I hadn't anticipated.
And then came Hobbiton. That moment was what I now call my "signature moment," the experience that inspired the entire trip. Walking through those grounds, seeing those colorful doors I had admired for years on my screen, it was magical. I would go back in a heartbeat. We also visited the WETA Workshop in Wellington, where our small group ate at a wonderful restaurant and got to know each other. Our tour guide was excellent. And at the end of the cruise, Milford Sound became the icing on the cake. We had a park ranger onboard narrating for us, and it was just captivating.

What I Learned for My Clients
This trip taught me that this kind of adventure is absolutely doable for a Solo Traveler. There are so many reasons people travel solo, whether they're single, widowed, or simply don't have friends aligned with their travel interests. A cruise offers a safe, budget-friendly way to see this part of the world. When you step off the ship, someone knows you're gone and knows when you should return. That matters.
I also learned about booking early. I paid $3,700 for a balcony cabin with the Princess Plus Package. Months later, the same cabin was listed at over $9,000. The earlier you book, the better your options and pricing. Put down a refundable deposit as soon as you see the schedule and decide later if it's right for you.

Now when I work with clients, I lead with their signature moment. What's the one thing that has been tugging at your heart? We build the entire itinerary around that. Hobbiton taught me this, and it's changed how I help others plan their most meaningful journeys. I want to share that kind of experience with my clients, the feeling of finally arriving at a place you've dreamed about for years.
