What continually surprises me about Hawaii is how deeply the Hawaiian culture and roots have been preserved. The pride of the young people in retaining their heritage is palpable everywhere you go. This isn't a place that has been completely overtaken by tourism. It still feels exotic, a little bit wild, and authentically Hawaiian.
The moment that still lingers with me happened after a long hike through the Honua'Lua Rainforest. I took our group to my favorite restaurant, Sunset Kai Lanai, which overlooks the ocean with perfect sunset views. We gathered around the table, tired from our trek but buzzing with energy, sharing stories over fresh seafood as the sun dipped below the horizon. The sky turned shades of orange and pink, and for a few peaceful moments, everything felt exactly right. This is the Hawaii I want everyone to experience.
One of the great revelations from my trips has been learning how to maximize time at Volcano National Park. On my first visit, I booked an overnight in Hilo, thinking we needed extra time near the park. Hilo is pleasant enough, but it's primarily home to state and municipal government offices. It's a bit sleepy, with limited adventure opportunities. On my second visit, I discovered you can easily make it a day trip from Kona. We left early, stopped at the black sand beach to watch turtles nesting, enjoyed a picnic lunch, and still completed the full two-hour hike on Kīlauea Iki Trail, a frozen lava lake that simply must not be missed. Skip the overnight in Hilo and save yourself the time.
Local Secrets Worth Knowing
If you want to experience Kona like a local, head to happy hour at On the Rocks in old town Kona. It sits right on the rocks with waves crashing beside you. During whale season, you might spot them breaching while you sip your drink. Add an amazing sunset, and you have Kona distilled to its essence. This is the kind of place you only find when you've spent real time on the island.
And then there's the adventure of driving to the peak of Mauna Kea. Imagine starting your day at a comfortable 30 degrees Celsius and ending it at freezing temperatures, watching Kīlauea volcano erupting under a sky full of stars. That temperature swing alone captures the diversity of experiences Big Island offers in a single day.
Who Will Love Big Island
Most travelers experience Hawaii in Maui, maybe adding a few days in Oahu. But Big Island, being slightly harder to reach, offers so much more without feeling like you're just off the coast of mainland United States. This island is perfect for anyone, young or old, who seeks adventure, excitement, and independence in their travels. It's ideal for active couples, multi-generational families with a spirit for exploration, and anyone who wants more than a poolside vacation.
Big Island is not for those seeking an all-inclusive, fly and flop vacation. If your ideal trip involves never leaving the resort, this probably isn't your island. But if you want to hike volcanic craters, snorkel with sea turtles, and watch the sun set over crashing waves with a drink in hand, I cannot wait to help you plan this adventure.
