Find Croatia's Soul Beyond the Coast
I've always believed that the best way to serve my clients is to experience destinations firsthand. So when I had the opportunity to lead a group of 25 travelers through Croatia for 10 days, I knew this was my chance to truly understand what makes this country so captivating. What I discovered far exceeded my expectations and completely changed how I'll recommend Croatia to future travelers.
Croatia had been on my radar for years, largely because of those iconic images of Dubrovnik's terracotta rooftops and crystal-clear Adriatic waters. But I wanted to dig deeper, to understand the layers of history and culture that make this destination more than just a pretty coastline. I needed to see it, taste it, and feel it for myself.
Discovering Split's Ancient Heart
The moment I fell completely in love with Croatia was in Split. This city is literally built around Diocletian's Palace, an ancient Roman structure that has been continuously inhabited for over 1,700 years. Unlike Dubrovnik, which felt crowded and somewhat overwhelming, Split had a different energy. People were living their daily lives within palace walls that once housed a Roman emperor. I watched locals hanging laundry from medieval windows and children playing soccer in courtyards where Roman soldiers once walked. It felt authentic in a way that surprised me.
What struck me most was how rich Croatia is in history. Roman times, the Byzantine era, the Hapsburgs, and more recent conflict and rebuilding. This is a country that has endured and grown through centuries of change. In Dubrovnik, our tour guide shared her personal experience growing up under constant threat and attack during the conflict with Bosnia. Hearing her story transformed the way I understood this place. The people here carry their history with them, and being open to learning about their experiences adds an entirely different dimension to any visit.
The Dalmatian Table and Beyond
The food on the Dalmatian coast was absolutely amazing. I became somewhat obsessed with the black ink pasta, a dish that looks dramatic but tastes incredibly rich and briny. The seafood options seemed endless, and I could taste the Italian influence in every bite, but with a distinctly Croatian flair. And the wine? Much better than I anticipated. Every meal felt like a celebration.
But here's what most travelers would never figure out on their own: don't just spend time on the Dalmatian coast. The interior of Croatia, particularly on the way to Zagreb, is completely different. We drove through a six-kilometer tunnel on our way to Plitvice Falls, and when we emerged on the other side, the temperature had dropped eight degrees Celsius. Suddenly, we felt like we were in the Austrian Alps. The landscape, the architecture, even the food and wine had an entirely different character. It was such a beautiful contrast that several people in our group asked if we had crossed into another country.
Plitvice Falls itself was worth every effort to reach. The hike through felt like stepping into another world, with cascading waterfalls and crystal-clear lakes surrounded by lush forest. It's not the easiest destination to access, but it's absolutely worth the journey.
Who This Trip Is For
Croatia is perfect for couples seeking an active and stimulating experience. This is a destination for adventurers in gastronomy and nature, people who want to hike, taste, explore, and learn. While there are many beaches along the coast, it would honestly be a waste to travel to Croatia and simply sit on the sand. There's too much to discover.
I now actively promote Croatia as a different way to enjoy Northern Europe. It pairs beautifully with Venice and other parts of Northern Italy, creating an itinerary that surprises clients who might otherwise default to more familiar European destinations. Having walked these streets myself, having tasted that black ink pasta and emerged from that tunnel into an entirely different landscape, I can speak to Croatia with genuine enthusiasm and real knowledge. That's something I simply couldn't offer before this trip, and it's exactly why firsthand experience matters so much in what I do.
