Ian Elliott Discovers Why Portugal Is Perfect for Families

When my husband and I decided to take our 14-month-old daughter on her first European adventure, Portugal felt like the right choice. We had heard the country was family-friendly, that Lisbon blended old-world charm with modern energy, and that the Algarve offered stunning coastal beauty. But I needed to experience it myself. As a travel advisor, I wanted to understand what it truly feels like to navigate a European destination with a toddler in tow.

We flew into Lisbon in late May, giving ourselves 12 days to explore. That timeline turned out to be perfect. We spent the first stretch wandering Lisbon's winding streets, soaking in the city's mix of history and culture. Then we drove south to the Algarve, where we balanced pool time with coastal exploration before returning to Lisbon for our flight home.

A Country That Welcomed Us at Every Turn

What struck me most about Portugal was how genuinely accommodating everyone was. If we were standing in a long line, people would wave us to the front. Every restaurant had high chairs ready. Locals went out of their way to help, whether we were asking for directions or simply navigating a crowded plaza with our stroller. Everyone spoke English, and the warmth felt effortless rather than performative. I have traveled to many countries, but I have rarely felt this level of consistent kindness toward families with young children.

Lisbon itself surprised me with its layers. The old city is undeniably charming, but there are modern touches woven throughout. Beautiful parks with playgrounds and grassy areas dot the landscape, offering perfect spots for our daughter to burn off energy. One of my favorite discoveries was how affordable everything was. Meals, wine, beer, even snacks from the supermarket cost significantly less than other parts of Europe. That was a pleasant surprise we had not anticipated.

The Practical Lessons I Brought Home

I will be honest: Lisbon's cobblestone streets and hilly terrain made stroller navigation tricky at times. We ended up carrying our daughter more than we expected. But we managed, and it did not diminish the experience. In fact, it taught me something important for my clients. If you are traveling with a toddler in Lisbon, pack a carrier as a backup and plan for slower days between busier ones. That rhythm of one adventurous day followed by one relaxed day worked beautifully for us.

One tip I cannot stress enough: book attractions like Sintra and Pena Palace well in advance. We researched this before our trip, securing tickets and transfers a couple of weeks ahead, and it saved us so much time. Without that preparation, we would have struggled to find a slot that worked around our daughter's schedule. I also recommend visiting Cascais, Cabo da Roca, and the sea caves at Ponta da Piedade in the Algarve. These sites were stunning, and the memories we made there are ones I keep returning to.

Who Should Go (And What I Now Know)

Portugal truly has something for everyone. For families, Lisbon and the Algarve offer the perfect combination of exploration and relaxation. For couples or adults seeking wine tasting and nightlife, Porto was recommended to us repeatedly, and it is already on my list for a future trip. The climate in late May and early June was ideal, warm but not overwhelming at around 25 degrees Celsius.

If you are only visiting Lisbon, you do not need a rental car. Uber, taxis and public transportation make getting around easy, and driving in the city can be chaotic with parking at a premium. We rented a car because we were heading to the Algarve with our toddler, but for city-focused trips, I would advise skipping the rental entirely.

This trip changed how I will recommend Portugal to my clients. I now understand the pacing required, the value of advance bookings, and the genuine hospitality that awaits families traveling with little ones. I cannot wait to send clients here, knowing exactly what they will experience and how to help them make the most of every moment.
