Holly Slater's Puerto Vallarta Discovery: Beyond the Malecon

Tall palm trees frame a sandy Puerto Vallarta beach with turquoise waves and cloudy sky overhead

I've recommended Puerto Vallarta to clients for years, but there's nothing quite like wandering those cobblestone streets yourself. When the opportunity came to join a Hyatt All Inclusive FAM trip, I knew it was time to see firsthand what this Pacific coast destination truly offers. I needed to understand the nuances between properties, to feel the rhythm of the town, and to discover what makes each resort unique for different travelers.

What I found exceeded every expectation I had walking in.

A Day That Changed Everything

The moment I keep telling everyone about happened on a local exploration day. We left the resort behind and wandered into town, letting the energy of Puerto Vallarta guide us. The cathedral rose up before us, its spires catching the afternoon light as locals went about their daily routines around us. But the real magic came when we took a ride out to a tequila factory for a tasting. Standing in that distillery, learning about the craft and tradition behind each bottle, surrounded by other advisors who share my passion for authentic travel experiences, I felt the essence of Mexico in a way no resort brochure could ever capture.

Here's what surprised me most: I stayed at a couple of resorts that were completely new to me, and now I can sell them with genuine confidence to the right client. Before this trip, I would have made recommendations based on research and reviews. Now I know exactly how the morning light falls across the pools, which restaurants serve the most memorable cuisine, and where guests should request rooms for the best views.

The Real Puerto Vallarta

The Malecon gets all the attention, and yes, it's lovely. But one of my biggest takeaways from this trip is that it's not the only great street in PV. The side streets tell different stories. They're quieter, more authentic, filled with local shops and restaurants where tourists rarely venture. I made mental notes of every tucked away spot, every corner cafe, every place that felt genuinely Mexican rather than tourist oriented. These are the recommendations I can now offer my clients who want more than the standard itinerary.

What I now understand, something I couldn't have known without being there, is that Puerto Vallarta truly has a resort for any budget and travel type. The range is remarkable. Whether someone is planning a romantic getaway, a multi-generational family reunion, or a friends trip with an adventurous spirit, there's a perfect property waiting for them. I walked the grounds, tested the beds, ate at the restaurants, and spoke with the staff. That knowledge lives in me now in a way that reading descriptions never could provide.

Who This Destination Is Made For

All my family travelers would absolutely love Puerto Vallarta. The all inclusive format takes the stress out of vacation planning, the resort activities keep everyone entertained, and the cultural excursions add depth to the experience. Parents can relax knowing the kids are having fun, while couples can steal away for their own adventures.

However, I would be honest with clients who dream of crystal clear turquoise waters for snorkeling or diving. That's not Puerto Vallarta's strength. The Pacific waters here are beautiful, but they don't offer the visibility you'd find in the Caribbean. For those travelers, I'd guide them toward a different destination entirely.

Moving forward, I will make sure to present all the resort options that truly fit each client's needs. I've seen the differences now. I've felt them. And that firsthand experience makes all the difference when matching a family to their perfect vacation. Puerto Vallarta has earned a special place in my recommendations, and I cannot wait to help my clients discover the same magic I found on those winding streets beyond the Malecon.
