Grace Wong Discovers the Real Virgin Voyages Experience

The question I hear most often from clients is direct and slightly skeptical: "Isn't Virgin a party cruise?" It's the kind of assumption that gets repeated so often it starts to feel like fact. So when our TravelOnly National Conference was held aboard Resilient Lady on a five-night Caribbean sailing from Miami, it was the perfect opportunity for me to experience Virgin firsthand
What I discovered was far more than any brochure could convey. Yes, Scarlet Night is energetic and a little unconventional. But here's what most people may not realize: you can just as easily have a great dinner, find a quiet lounge, listen to live music, head to the gym, book a fitness class, or simply relax. There's no expectation that you have to participate in everything. That was probably my biggest takeaway from experiencing Virgin firsthand. You can make the cruise what you want it to be, without judgement.
What Actually Sets Virgin Apart

Something I particularly appreciated throughout the week was very little upselling. No photographers constantly asking you to pose. No art auctions. No feeling that every time you turn around, someone is trying to sell you something else, and its absence aboard Resilient Lady was so refreshing.
I met people across a wide range of ages onboard. That surprised me too. Age really isn't the deciding factor here. What matters much more is how you like to travel. The atmosphere is modern, casual, adults only, and deliberately different. There's plenty of room to find your own version of a vacation, whether that means dancing until midnight or enjoying a quiet evening with live music in one of the lounges.
Even on disembarkation day, the experience felt different. You don't need to be off the ship at the same time as the sun rises. You can take your time, have a sit down breakfast to end your vacation without being rushed. It's a small detail, but it speaks to the overall approach: this is cruising designed for people who want to feel relaxed and not rushed.

Who Should Sail and Who Should Skip
So who do I think Virgin is right for? Someone who wants an adults-only vacation, appreciates great food, enjoys a more contemporary and casual atmosphere, and doesn't need all the traditions that normally come with cruising. If that sounds like you, this experience will feel like a perfect fit.
On the other hand, if formal nights, traditional cruise entertainment, a main dining room, and a more structured onboard experience are things you love, Virgin may not be your best fit. And that's important. As a travel advisor, my job isn't to tell everyone they should sail Virgin. It's to understand the experience well enough to know who should.

Why Firsthand Experience Matters
There were things I loved: relaxing in the red hammock, all restaurants are included, and a few things I would want my clients to know before booking. But that's exactly why experiencing the product firsthand matters. After spending time aboard Resilient Lady, I can now answer those questions from experience rather than from a brochure or website.
Virgin Voyages may not be for everyone. But it also isn't simply the "party ship" people sometimes assume it is. Sometimes knowing whether a cruise line isn't right for you is just as valuable as knowing when it is. That's the kind of insight I can offer with confidence, and it's exactly what my clients deserve when they're planning their next vacation.

Next up for me: Colombia, exploring the Magdalena River with AmaWaterways. There's always more to discover.
