David Petlin's Golden Triangle: Prague, Vienna, and Budapest

Hungary — David Petlin's travel story

There's something magnetic about Central Europe's Golden Triangle. Prague, Vienna, and Budapest have long captivated travelers, but I wanted to experience this classic route in a fresh way. So I organized a celebration trip for friends, family, and clients, combining independent hotel stays with a Riverside Luxury Cruises river cruise. What I discovered changed how I'll plan these trips forever.

We stayed at the W in Prague, the Matilda Palace in Budapest, and the Almanac in Vienna. But the real revelation came aboard Riverside's ship sailing from Vienna to Budapest. With about 10 people joining various parts of the journey, I designed a trip where guests could drop in and out. Some did the cruise, some did all of it, some just joined for a couple of cities. This flexibility made group travel feel effortless rather than rigid.

Service That Anticipates Your Needs

The personalized service on Riverside is what I keep thinking about. Within minutes of boarding, staff knew our names. Sometimes they even knew who we were without us ever introducing ourselves. Our room was always perfectly stocked with a great mini bar. They remembered my special dessert from my last cruise: white chocolate truffles, delivered to my room every night at turndown. The bartenders went above and beyond, learning my flavor profile and creating custom drinks just for me. At dinner, there was never a "no" to anything we ordered. Multiple dishes for the table to share? Always delivered beautifully.

The butler service deserves special mention. On my final morning, I let my butler know I wanted help with luggage packing. I went to breakfast at 8 a.m., and not only did they pack everything, but they came to find me in the dining room to let me know my suitcase was already on the transfer vehicle to my next destination. Late-night french fry deliveries from room service, brought right to your door? The butlers have hidden talents that you really need to experience to understand.

Budapest's Delicious Surprise

Hungary — David Petlin's travel story

The biggest surprise was Budapest's food scene. I'll admit I was hesitant, expecting heavy Hungarian goulash and paprika-laden dishes. Instead, I found a diverse city with a wonderful cross-section of flavors. We ate at a really good Japanese Peruvian restaurant serving Nikkei-style food with amazing show elements. The architecture throughout Budapest is absolutely beautiful, and the city proved remarkably walkable. We covered so much ground just by exploring on foot. Some clients did a guided walking tour and loved learning the history of both the Buda and Pest sides.

I also gained invaluable firsthand experience with low water issues on the river cruise. These situations happen several times a year, and Riverside handled it with professionalism. Now I can speak honestly with clients about what low water experiences are really like, how cruise lines compensate, and how you can still have a wonderful trip despite the adjustments.

Who Would Love This Journey

Hungary — David Petlin's travel story

This trip appeals to an incredibly wide range of travelers. Retirees, empty-nesters, multi-generational families. Riverside offers connecting room options with no age restrictions. History lovers, contemporary art enthusiasts, foodies, and culture seekers will all find something compelling. I consider this an ideal second European destination. So many first-timers head straight for London, Paris, or Rome, but Prague and Budapest offer remarkable value while Vienna delivers that classic European elegance.

The only travelers I'd caution are those with mobility challenges. The cobblestones throughout these cities require solid walking ability. But for almost everyone else in my database, I'd wholeheartedly recommend this route.

My biggest takeaway? We packed a lot into eight nights, but I'd add one or two more, especially for Budapest. We're already heading back this December to see the Christmas markets in Prague, spending four nights at the W before boarding another Riverside cruise to celebrate New Year's Eve in Austria. When a trip compels you to return within the same year, you know you've found something special.
