At a Glance

On my first trip to Japan, I discovered that the country's cleanliness, respectful culture, and exceptional cuisine completely transformed my initial skepticism into genuine enthusiasm. I learned that meticulous planning is essential to navigate the complexity, and that personal experience proved irreplaceable for understanding both the historical sites and natural beauty that define the destination.

I had heard about Japan for years. The temples, the cherry blossoms, the bullet trains. But as a travel advisor, hearing about a place and truly understanding it are completely different things. When the opportunity came to host 155 clients and friends on a 12 day cruise around the Japanese islands, I knew this was my chance to experience a destination that had always intrigued me. We flew into Narita Airport and made our way to the Hilton in downtown Tokyo before boarding our ship, and from the moment I stepped onto Japanese soil, I realized everything I thought I knew barely scratched the surface.

The first thing that struck me was the cleanliness. I'm not a germaphobe by any means, but Tokyo's level of organization and pristine presentation genuinely surprised me. Even at construction sites, all the dust and debris stayed completely contained behind barriers. The work happened invisibly while everything visitors could see and touch remained beautiful. It was my first glimpse into a culture that takes pride in every single detail.

What I didn't expect was the food. Everyone talks about sushi when they mention Japan, but the real revelation for me was the Wagyu beef. Kobe beef and Japanese Wagyu appeared on menus everywhere, and each experience outdid the last. The steakhouses we visited served some of the best meals I've ever had in my life. The soups, the rice bowls, the attention to flavor and presentation. Japanese cuisine became the trip's best kept secret, something I now tell everyone about.

The Culture of Respect

The Japanese people welcomed us with a level of respect and courtesy that genuinely moved me. There's very little English spoken, which surprised me since it's not commonly taught as a second language in schools. But despite the communication barrier, we never felt unwelcome. Locals found ways to help, to guide, to connect. That cultural warmth made every interaction memorable.

One discovery that still excites me: I could take a train from downtown Tokyo to the mountains and go skiing for the day. The rental shops provided everything from helmet to gloves to ski pants, all included. An hour and a half on the train, a full day on the slopes, and I was back in the city for dinner. That kind of accessibility to completely different experiences within a single day showed me just how much Japan packs into one destination.

The Weight of History

Our cruise took us to some of Japan's most significant historical sites, including the atomic bomb memorials. The way these locations present their history is remarkable. The accuracy, the detail, the unflinching honesty about what happened when the bombs fell. It paints a complete picture and shows the incredible resilience of people who rebuilt from devastation. These sites aren't for everyone, and I understand that. But for travelers who want to truly comprehend Japan's story, they're essential.

For those who prefer to focus on natural beauty, there's more than enough to fill any itinerary. Mount Fuji rising in the distance, cherry blossoms lining ancient paths, bonsai gardens that represent centuries of careful cultivation, and temples that take your breath away with their craftsmanship.

What I Tell My Clients Now

Here's what I wish someone had told me before I went: Japan has no gray area. Everything operates on precision and planning. You need your accommodations booked, your transfers arranged, and your timing mapped out before you arrive. Tokyo is vast and expensive to cross without a plan. Miss a step in your itinerary and you might miss the experience entirely. This isn't a destination for winging it.

I recommend Japan to travelers who genuinely want to immerse themselves in a culture unlike anything they've experienced before. History enthusiasts, food lovers, and anyone fascinated by a society that values order, beauty, and tradition. If I hadn't gone myself, I probably wouldn't know to recommend it at all. Now, having walked those streets, tasted that food, and witnessed that culture firsthand, I can't wait to send my clients there. Japan changed how I think about travel, and I know it will do the same for them.
