Craig White Discovers Cambodia's Soul on the Mekong River
At a Glance
On my Mekong River cruise through Cambodia, I discovered authentic human connection and cultural resilience that challenged my assumptions about Asian travel. The locals' genuine warmth and English fluency stood out most, while cities like Siem Reap surprised me with rooftop bars rivaling Vegas—all at a fraction of typical costs.
I needed to see Cambodia for myself. As a travel advisor, I can read brochures and study itineraries all day long, but there's no substitute for standing on the ground, meeting the people, and understanding what makes a destination truly special. So when the opportunity came to host a group of wonderful travelers on an AMA Waterways river cruise down the Mekong, I knew this was my chance to experience Cambodia right through its very heart.
What I discovered was a country in the early stages of welcoming the world, and that freshness was genuinely refreshing. Cambodia isn't on most travelers' radar yet, which means you're not fighting crowds or navigating over-commercialized tourist traps. The tourism industry is emerging, still finding its footing, and that rawness gives you something rare: an authentic connection to a place before it changes.
The People Made Every Moment Memorable
If I had to choose one thing I keep telling people about, it's the Cambodian people themselves. Their warmth caught me completely off guard. They love engaging with westerners, asking questions, sharing stories, and practicing their English (which, by the way, is excellent). Every interaction felt genuine rather than transactional. These are people who have endured unimaginable hardship under the Khmer Rouge regime, yet their resilience and kindness shine through in everything they do. I never could have understood this depth of character from a guidebook.
The contrast between rural and urban Cambodia surprised me most. Out in the countryside, development remains modest, villages feel untouched by modern tourism, and the pace of life moves slowly (and yes, the heat is intense). But then you arrive in Siem Reap or Phnom Penh and suddenly you're surrounded by towering concrete buildings, modern skyscrapers, and rooftop patios that feel almost cosmopolitan. It's a fascinating duality that keeps you constantly recalibrating your expectations.
Speaking of rooftop patios, here's something most travelers would never figure out on their own. In Siem Reap, we found a rooftop bar that would make you think you'd been transported to Vegas. Incredible observation decks, world-class drinks, amazing DJs spinning as the sun set over the city, and service that rivaled anywhere I've been. The evening vistas were stunning. And the price? A fraction of what you'd pay anywhere else in the world. That's the kind of insider discovery that transforms a trip from good to unforgettable.
Who This Trip Is For
Cambodia calls to a specific type of traveler. If you want to understand history, particularly the Killing Fields and the genocide that claimed millions of lives, this destination offers profound and necessary lessons. If you're moved to give back, you can visit underdeveloped schools, bring supplies, and directly help children access better learning opportunities. This is travel with purpose and depth.
However, I'll be honest about who should probably skip it. If you're sensitive to confronting death, destruction, and the dark chapters of human history, Cambodia's most significant sites may be overwhelming. The stories here are heavy, important, and not for everyone.
My biggest takeaway? Immerse yourself in the culture with an open mind. Learn a few words of Khmer. A simple hello, thank you, or goodbye shows respect and opens doors. The AMA Waterways cruise on the Mekong delivered five star service, incredible food, and a seamless way to experience this country.
Looking back, I wouldn't change much about how we structured this trip. Maybe I'd add that rooftop bar to every itinerary from now on. Otherwise, every day brought a wonderful new surprise. That's exactly what I want for my clients: that sense of discovery, that connection to something real. Cambodia delivered, and I cannot wait to send the right travelers there to experience it for themselves.
