Colleen Johnson: Why Africa Captures a Piece of Your Heart
I have been so fortunate to experience Africa three times now, with my fourth trip already planned for spring. Each visit leaves me with the same overwhelming feeling: I really can't wait to go back. This is a destination that truly changes you, and I believe everyone should experience it at least once in their lifetime.
What drew me back again and again? It's difficult to articulate until you've been there yourself. The vast landscapes stretch endlessly before you, and the sheer size of the animals takes your breath away. Everything feels so natural and authentic in their environment. There's no manufactured experience here, just pure, wild Africa unfolding around you.
The Moments That Stay With You
One scene I keep thinking about, the one I find myself telling everyone: we were watching elephants at a watering hole, observing their natural pecking order as they moved with deliberate grace. Then came the little warthogs. They didn't care one bit about the hierarchy. They just ran in between and underneath all of the elephants and went straight to the water. It was this perfect, unscripted moment that captured everything I love about safari. The unpredictability, the humor, the reminder that nature operates on its own terms.
Here's something I learned from watching the guides closely: they are incredibly experienced trackers and don't find the animals by luck. They are reading the bush, listening to the birds, noticing fresh tracks, and watching for broken branches around them. It's all clues toward understanding the natural environment. Observing them work taught me as much about Africa as seeing the wildlife itself. This intimate experience of learning how to read the landscape added an entirely new dimension to my understanding of safari.
Every Safari Tells Its Own Story
What I now understand is that every safari is different, and you simply can't compare your trip to someone else's experience. The animals are unpredictable. Some travelers will witness a wild dog hunt, which is rare and extraordinary. Others might observe a family of elephants interacting peacefully by a watering hole. And sometimes the most profound moment is the simple silence as you have a sundowner, watching the African sunset paint the sky in golden hues. These are the moments that will stay with you forever.
Africa creates an experience unlike anywhere else on Earth. It draws you into each moment completely. The golden sunrises that wash over the savanna, the sounds of animals stirring at night, the vast landscape that seems to stretch into infinity, and the most amazing wildlife that is so unpredictable. Every encounter is unique and remarkable in its own way.
My Advice for Future Travelers
My biggest piece of advice? Don't make the Big 5 your goal. Put down the camera. Be in the moment. Go with an open mind and sit in silence, just watching Africa unfold around you. It is amazing what you discover when you stop looking for specific things and simply allow yourself to be present.
This destination is exceptional for travelers who crave something authentic, who want to feel connected to nature in a profound way. It's perfect for those celebrating milestones, seeking moments of genuine wonder they'll carry with them always. Once you've experienced Africa, a part of your heart will always remain there. I know mine does. And I cannot wait to help my clients discover this feeling for themselves. Next on my own list? Antarctica, another of the few places on Earth that truly feels untouched. But Africa? Africa will always call me back.
