Cathy Scott's Scotland: Where Women Find Adventure and Friendship
I've been creating women's tours for well over 20 years now, and every destination teaches me something new. But Scotland had been calling to me for a different reason. I wanted to see if this land of mist and legend could deliver the kind of transformative experience my travelers crave. This past May, I finally answered that call, leading a group of women on my "Scotland Beyond the Mist" tour, an eight-night journey that would take us from Edinburgh's historic streets to the rugged beauty of the Isle of Skye.
What I discovered exceeded every expectation I had going in.
The Landscape That Keeps Changing
The diversity of Scotland's terrain genuinely surprised me. One moment we were surrounded by lush, green hills that reminded me of Vancouver Island. The next, we found ourselves in charming small cities rich with culture and history. We traveled from Edinburgh to Pitlochry, then on to Fort William, the Isle of Skye, and finally Glasgow. Each stop revealed a completely different character. The mistiness of the weather, which some might complain about, actually enchanted me. It wrapped around the mountains and lochs like a soft blanket, making every view feel like stepping into a painting.
And the sheep. I cannot stress this enough. There are sheep everywhere. Apparently, there are something like nine times as many sheep as humans in Scotland (possibly more). They dotted every hillside, wandered along country roads, and became a running joke among our group. It's one of those details you simply cannot appreciate until you're there, constantly stopping to let fluffy white obstacles cross your path.
The Magic of Working Dogs and Bonding Women
One experience I keep telling everyone about was watching the sheepdog demonstrations. These incredible working dogs, trained to herd sheep with precise commands, put on a show that was nothing short of magical. The skill, the partnership between handler and dog, the way the sheep responded to these animals. It was mesmerizing. Our entire group stood in awe, and it became one of those shared moments that bonds travelers together in unexpected ways.
Speaking of bonding, what always stands out most on my women's tours is how quickly the women connect. Within days, it's like they've known each other forever. They share stories, laughter, and by the end, they're already planning their next adventure together. Women travel differently than co-ed groups. We are more experiential. We want to taste, touch, and truly absorb everything a destination offers. Everyone brings different interests and perspectives, which means you see places through multiple lenses. It makes every day richer.
Glasgow particularly delighted us. We spent a few days exploring its art galleries and museums, and the city's creative energy was infectious. The locals were warm and welcoming, eager to share their culture with curious visitors.
Who This Journey Is Perfect For
This trip is ideal for adventurous women who want to explore the world with a group of kindred spirits. Our travelers typically range from about 50 to 70, though age really isn't the deciding factor. About half are married women who simply want to travel without their husbands for a change, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. The key qualities? Being open-minded, kind, and adaptable. Things can go wrong when you travel, and having a positive attitude makes all the difference for everyone.
What I now know, having walked these misty roads and laughed with these incredible women, is that Scotland delivers something truly special. The landscape surprises you, the culture embraces you, and the friendships formed along the way stay with you long after you return home. I cannot wait to bring more women here to experience it themselves.
