Annie Aspden Discovers Why Jamaica's Resorts Exceed Expectations

Jamaica — Annie Aspden's travel story

I had never been to Jamaica before this trip. I had never experienced a Sandals or Beaches resort firsthand. I’ve always believed in really knowing what I recommend to my clients, and it was time to experience this one for myself. When the opportunity came up for a familiarization trip to tour all the Sandals and Beaches properties across Jamaica, I knew this was my chance to truly understand what makes these resorts special.

I'll be honest: I designate myself as a bit of a room snob. So when I say that every room category I toured through met my expectations and beyond, that's saying something. I walked through each tier, from the more affordable options to the most luxurious suites, and was genuinely impressed. Even the lower category rooms were absolutely beautiful. But the ones with a tub on the balcony or the swim-up rooms? Those were fantastic. The nature and flora and fauna surrounding each resort added something I personally need when I vacation. The beaches in Jamaica were absolutely stunning, with that Caribbean water that looks almost unreal.

What truly surprised me was everything that's included with a Sandals or Beaches stay. I knew water sports were part of the package, but I wasn't prepared for the amount and quality of what's actually offered. You can go on a Hobie Cat sailing excursion. You can snorkel, scuba dive, paddleboard, kayak, or try windsurfing. I did a tour on a glass bottom boat where you can see the ocean floor as you travel through the Caribbean. Most resorts charge extra for these experiences. Here, they're simply part of your vacation.

Something else that really adds to the experience is the no-tipping policy. You don't need to walk around with money. That freedom changes how you move through your day. And the staff are some of the kindest, most wonderful people I've ever met. They are so helpful and truly make it such an enjoyable experience.

Understanding Each Resort's Personality

After touring through all the properties, I now have a better understanding of each resort and the different vibe or experience my clients might be wanting. If someone is looking for more activities and nightlife, I would definitely suggest Sandals Ochi for that energy. But if someone wants a more quiet, intimate, maybe more elegant luxury experience, I'm going to send them to Sandals Royal Plantation. Something that's also great value right now is that the Sandals resorts impacted by the hurricane have been completely renovated. You're pretty much walking into a brand new resort that has been updated throughout.

Who Should Book These Resorts

Sandals is designed specifically for adult couples. You do need to be a couple to stay there, and they have really focused on romance, making it an elevated romantic experience with so much to do together. These properties are now my go-to resort when recommending honeymoons. The overwater bungalows and other room categories make for an unforgettable start to a marriage.

Beaches, on the other hand, is truly a luxury experience for families. I toured through Beaches Negril and their kids program, and the amenities they have for children are some of the best I have seen. Something that really jumped out to me is that Beaches resorts are Advanced Certified Autism Centers with specially trained Kids Camp staff, sensory guides, and one-on-one support for families who need it. They accommodate dietary sensitivities and even have Sesame Street characters walking around the resort, which adds to the fun and wonder for your children. Especially if you are traveling with a child who has specific needs, this is something to take into consideration.

Jamaica — Annie Aspden's travel story

I went to Jamaica not knowing what to expect. I came home completely blown away and ready to match every couple and family with their perfect resort. When you know your clients and you've walked the grounds yourself, you can fit their needs with precision. That's exactly why I travel.

My Personal Favourite?

I absolutely fell in love with Sandals South Coast. Designed with the charm of a European village in mind, the resort immediately reminded me of Italy, with its beautiful architecture, lush greenery, and romantic atmosphere. There are also touches of Dutch inspiration throughout—including Dutch-style bicycles you can hop on to explore the resort, similar to what you’ll find at Sandals Royal Curaçao.

What really stood out to me, though, was the setting. Sandals South Coast feels wonderfully tucked away from Jamaica’s busier tourist areas, making it such a great choice for couples who truly want to relax and escape. Surrounded by a protected nature reserve, the resort feels incredibly peaceful, lush, and secluded—and that natural beauty is a huge part of what makes it so special.
