China: A Journey That Changed the Way I See Travel

Some journeys are vacations.

Others are experiences that change the way you see a destination and the way you help others experience it.

My journey through China was one of those experiences.

I had the incredible opportunity to travel through China on an educational group trip, designed to give me a deeper understanding of this fascinating country and the experiences it offers travellers.

Over 12 days, we travelled from the ancient streets of Beijing, along the mighty Yangtze River, through the enchanting cities of Hangzhou and Suzhou, and finally into the dazzling energy of Shanghai.

It was a journey through thousands of years of history, extraordinary landscapes, timeless traditions and remarkable contrasts.

And it reminded me once again why I love travel so much.

🏯 Beginning in Beijing: Where History Comes Alive

Our journey began in Beijing, a city where China's incredible history is woven into the fabric of modern life.

Walking through the Forbidden City, once home to generations of Chinese emperors, was an experience I'll never forget. The sheer scale, intricate architecture and centuries of stories surrounding us made it easy to imagine the world that once existed behind those magnificent walls.

And then there was the Great Wall of China.

Standing on one of the world's most recognizable landmarks and looking across the mountains, I couldn't help but marvel at the ambition, ingenuity and determination it took to create something so extraordinary.

It's one thing to see these places in photographs. It's something entirely different to stand there.

That is one of the greatest gifts of travel.

🚢 Cruising the Yangtze River

From Beijing, we flew to Chongqing and began one of the most memorable parts of our journey, a cruise along the Yangtze River, China's longest river and one of the most important waterways in the world.

For several days, the scenery became our ever-changing backdrop.

Dramatic gorges rose around us. Mountain villages appeared along the riverbanks. Historic relics and traditional communities offered glimpses into a way of life shaped by the river for generations.

And sometimes, the most memorable moments were the quiet ones.

Standing on deck, watching the landscape unfold as we slowly moved through the river gorges, there was nowhere else I needed to be. No rushing. No checking the clock. Just watching China reveal itself, one breathtaking view at a time.

🌿 Hangzhou & Suzhou: Beauty at Every Turn

Leaving the Yangtze behind, our journey continued to Hangzhou and Suzhou, two cities renowned for their natural beauty, gardens, waterways and timeless charm.

Hangzhou was serene and beautiful, with its famous West Lake and peaceful landscapes creating a wonderful contrast to the energy of Beijing. Suzhou was equally captivating.

Known for its classical gardens, canals and elegant architecture, it offered a glimpse into a more tranquil side of China.

These cities helped me appreciate just how diverse a journey through China can be. China isn't one experience.

It is many experiences woven together.

Ancient and modern. Peaceful and energetic. Traditional and cosmopolitan.

And that contrast is part of what makes travelling through China so fascinating.

✨ Shanghai: A Glimpse Into the Future

Our final stop was alluring Shanghai, and what a way to end the journey.

After immersing ourselves in thousands of years of history, Shanghai felt like stepping into the future.

The skyline, the architecture, the energy and the sheer scale of the city were incredible.

Yet even here, reminders of China's rich past were never far away.

That juxtaposition became one of my favourite things about the entire journey.

China doesn't ask you to choose between the past and the future. It allows you to experience both. The constant duality was intriguing to me.

❤️ What This Educational Journey Taught Me

Travelling through China as part of an educational trip gave me so much more than beautiful photographs and incredible memories.

It gave me first-hand knowledge.

I experienced the destinations, hotels, transportation, sightseeing and the flow of the journey for myself. I learned what makes each region unique, how the different destinations connect, and which experiences truly stand out.

And that matters when I'm planning travel for my clients.

Because when you ask me about China, I don't want to simply tell you what I've read in a brochure.

I want to be able to share what it feels like to be there.

I want to understand what might appeal to you, how to pace your journey, which experiences are worth prioritizing, and how to create an itinerary that feels exciting without becoming overwhelming.

After all, great travel isn't simply about collecting destination passport stamps.

It's about understanding a place and creating the right experience for the person travelling there.

🌏 And Would I Go Back?

Absolutely. Because 12 days gave me a wonderful introduction to China, but it also made one thing very clear:

There is so much more to discover. More cities. More history. More culture. More food. More landscapes. More stories.

And perhaps that's the best thing an educational journey can do. It doesn't just show you a destination.

It makes you want to return.
