Portugal had been calling to me for years. As a travel advisor, I'd recommended it countless times based on research and client feedback, but I knew I needed to experience it myself. So when a group of friends suggested we finally make the trip happen, I jumped at the chance. I wanted to understand the rhythm of this country, to feel the cobblestones under my feet and taste the wine straight from the source.

They wanted us to love their country as much as they do.
Lisbon surprised me most. I'll admit I had assumptions about large European capitals, expecting crowds and chaos to overshadow the beauty. Instead, I found a city that moves at its own pace. The historic neighborhoods spill down hillsides painted in warm ochres and faded pastels. Trams rattle through narrow streets lined with azulejo tiles. The culture and history here run deep, yet the city never feels stuffy or museum-like. It's alive, vibrant, and endlessly photogenic.
Mastering the Art of Getting Around
One of my biggest takeaways from this trip was understanding just how easy Portugal is to navigate. We visited Porto by flight, which was quick and affordable. Then we rented a car to explore the Algarve's dramatic coastline at our own pace, stopping whenever a viewpoint or village caught our eye. For other legs of the journey, we relied on Portugal's excellent train system.
Here's what I wish I'd known before: book as much as possible ahead of time. Train tickets, restaurant reservations, even popular attractions fill up faster than you'd expect. The spontaneity is wonderful, but a little planning goes a long way. And my strongest advice? Be open to trying different foods. The seafood here is exceptional, prepared simply to let the quality shine. Don't stick to what you know. Let the local cuisine guide you.
The Algarve Stole My Heart
If Lisbon surprised me, the Algarve region absolutely captivated me. The coastline is dramatic in a way that photographs simply cannot capture. Golden cliffs drop into turquoise waters, and hidden coves reveal themselves around every bend. For beach lovers, this stretch of southern Portugal is paradise. We spent hours exploring, swimming, and watching the sun sink into the Atlantic. It's the kind of place where time feels suspended.
Porto, meanwhile, has its own distinct personality. Grittier and more industrial than Lisbon, it's also deeply romantic. The Douro River cuts through the city, lined with port wine cellars and colorful buildings stacked along steep hillsides. Everyone in our group fell for Porto in their own way. It's that kind of place.
Who Should Go (And Why I Can Help)
Portugal is abundant with culture, wine, seafood, and stunning coastline. Beach lovers will find their paradise in the Algarve. City enthusiasts will fall hard for Lisbon's charm. And Porto? Porto is for everyone.
