St. Kitts Stole My Heart, Thanks to a Guide Named Royston
When St. Kitts first appeared on my cruise itinerary back in 2018, I had no expectations. I wasn't familiar with the island, wasn't sure what to do there. My husband Rob and our youngest son Eben were along for the ride, and we'd booked an ATV excursion mostly because it was one of the few places that didn't require our son to be 16 with a driver's license. As long as he could pass the safety demonstration, he could drive his own machine. We rumbled through volcano jungle, past the ruins of old sugar plantations, and I left thinking this little island deserved a closer look.
A year later, I got my chance. This time I was with Rob and some friends, and I wanted more than an ATV trail. I wanted to really see St. Kitts. So I booked a local tour with a guide named Royston.
The Day Everything Changed
I remember standing at the pickup point, waiting. The other tour guides noticed us and smiled. "Just wait," they said. "Soon you'll see a guy come running up the road. That'll be Royston." Sure enough, a few minutes later, this man came running toward us, full of energy, making his introduction on the move. He led us to his vehicle: an old Toyota van with windows only half covered in glass and simple bench seats. Rob looked at me with concern. "We aren't getting into that, are we?" My response was straightforward. "Yes we are. Be quiet and just get in." He did. And what he thought would be a disaster became one of his most treasured memories.
Royston didn't just show us tourist sites. He brought us everywhere. We visited Caribelle Batik for a stop that felt wonderfully unhurried. We swam at the beach, we stopped at a beach bar where monkeys wandered out of the bush to see if we had food to share (I wasn't expecting that at all). We explored the fort and had a picnic lunch featuring his favorite local dishes. The flavors surprised me. Royston showed us where the wealthy residents live and where the working families live. We saw harbor life, village kids playing, and views he'd discovered himself, places he simply thought were beautiful and wanted to share.
That old van? It turned out to be perfect. It could navigate roads where bigger tour buses couldn't go. There was no air conditioning, but the open windows let in a good breeze, and Royston kept a cooler of cold drinks for us. His passion for his country was unmistakable. He loves St. Kitts, and spending a day with him means you will too.
A Friendship That Keeps Bringing Me Back
In 2023, we returned with my mother and father-in-law and some friends we'd met onboard. Royston was there. In 2024, we came back with my oldest son Connor and daughter-in-law Lexus. Royston again. Earlier this year, we brought more friends. And this December, I'm headed back for another tour with him. He jokes now that we've become his most frequent travelers, that he sees us more than some of his own family on the island. I don't mind doing this tour over and over because I always discover something new.
St. Kitts is a spectacular island with remarkable variety. Beaches, volcanoes, jungle, ocean, ruins, history. There are only a few resorts on the island, which means it hasn't been overrun by crowds. That's part of its charm. There's also a sister island, Nevis, that I haven't had the chance to explore yet, but it's on my list.
Who Would Love This
I think there's something in St. Kitts for everyone, but Royston's tour is especially perfect for travelers who value authenticity over luxury. It isn't a polished, air-conditioned experience. It's full of heart. I can't wait to help my clients experience exactly what I did.
