Sometimes the best trips are the ones you don't overthink. When I realized my daughter had grown into someone who loves to travel as much as I do, I knew it was time to seize the moment. A few weeks before Christmas, I booked a last-minute trip to London for the two of us. No elaborate planning, no lengthy itinerary. Just a mother-daughter adventure to experience the city's famous Christmas markets.
As a travel advisor, I've sent plenty of clients to London. But I'd never seen it dressed up for the holidays, and I wanted to experience it myself before recommending it to others. What I discovered exceeded every expectation I had.
A City Transformed by Christmas
London at Christmas is something else entirely. I knew the city would be festive, but I wasn't prepared for the sheer scale of it all. The decorations put everything I've seen in Canada to shame. Every store was decorated completely over the top, with hundreds upon hundreds of Christmas trees twinkling in shop windows, on street corners, and inside every department store we wandered into. The British don't do subtle when it comes to holiday cheer, and I loved every minute of it.
We wandered through market after market, each one with its own character. The smell of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts followed us through the stalls. Handcrafted ornaments, artisan foods, and one-of-a-kind gifts were everywhere we looked. My daughter and I would stop, point, exclaim, and then move on to the next discovery. It never got old.
The Gift of Uninterrupted Time
What I keep thinking about most isn't just the decorations or the markets. It's the time I got to spend with my daughter. When your children become adults, life gets busy. You don't always get those one-on-one moments anymore. But for five days in London, it was just us. That connection was the real gift of this trip.
One lesson I'll carry forward: stay in a centralized location. We chose a hotel right in the heart of the city, and it made all the difference. We barely needed public transportation or taxis because everything was within walking distance. When you only have a few days, that kind of convenience is priceless. More time exploring, less time commuting.
Why Short Trips Are Worth It
Before this trip, I might have discouraged clients from flying across the Atlantic for only four or five days. It seemed too short, too rushed. Now I know better. Even with travel time factored in, our five-day trip was the perfect length to experience London at Christmas. We saw what we wanted to see, we didn't feel exhausted, and we came home with full hearts. The prices for booking last minute weren't bad either, which surprised me. We booked about three to four weeks in advance and it was absolutely worth every penny.
This trip would be perfect for mothers and daughters looking for quality time together, or girlfriends who want a festive getaway filled with shopping, markets, and holiday magic. I'll be honest: this probably isn't the trip for most husbands. Going from Christmas market to Christmas market and fitting all that shopping into a short window takes a certain kind of enthusiasm. But for the right traveler, it's pure joy.
